WHAT IS A MENTOR?

a true mentor is someone who creates space to empower another person to be the architect of their own life (versus training one to live and work just like them), recognizes that through the sharing of information and experience there is room for all to thrive, and acknowledges that there is always more to learn from the collective consciousness.

WHAT ARE MENTOR SESSIONS?

currently, mentor sessions are 30-minute or 1-hour free form video calls where you can walk away with thoughtful support, valuable knowledge, and useful resources. topics can include rates, finances, photo licensing, photo shoot production, project management, client relationships, day to day workflows, etc. and for photographers seeking more high-level support, i love discussing how to create a values-driven business that keeps you aligned with the communities and work that matters most to you.

based on the support you’re seeking, you can schedule sessions on-going or as-needed. when booking your session, you’ll fill out an in-take form to help me learn about who you are, where you are at, and what kind of support might be helpful.

WHO ARE MENTOR SESSIONS FOR?

  • THE BEGINNER | you love photography and are contemplating a career change. you are taking photos for family, friends, friends of friends and need guidance on the basics of setting up a photography business.

  • THE EARLY CAREER | you are ready to start the transition from a full-time job to full-time freelance photography. you have some systems in place and need guidance on how to set yourself up for success in the first few years of business.

  • THE ESTABLISHED | you are full-time freelance and are looking for a thought-partner to help you (re)define, clarify, and develop your business trajectory through values-driven action. you may also be looking for practical support and resources to help fine tune your systems and goals.

WHO AM I AND WHY DO I WANT TO MENTOR?

if we haven’t already met - hi, i’m alison! i’ve been working as a freelance photographer in the SF Bay area for the past 10 years. my passion lies in creating authentic, visual branding for small businesses and organizations. alongside that work, i also photograph portrait/headshot, editorial and commercial projects. in 2020, i co-founded a volunteer BIPOC photo-collective called By And For that biannually donates photography services to BIPOC business in the Bay.

being a mentor is important to me because i value community and believe that we are interdependent beings that need each other to thrive. freelance photography can be a lonely and confusing road, and i’m here so you don’t have to travel it alone.

also, i value racial and social equity and acknowledge that the photo industry is not as accessible and resourced for BIPOC, queer, lower-income, and disabled folks (especially those at the intersection of identities). my photo mentor sessions prioritize these communities in order to build a more diverse and just industry.
